Meet at Tromsø’s Radisson Blu for a roughly one-hour ride to a reindeer camp near the Lyngen Alps. Feed the family herd, warm up in a Sámi lavvu, enjoy hot drinks and reindeer stew, and hear personal stories from Sámi guides such as Kristian and Jon Mikkel. The four-and-a-half-hour outing runs in English.

“The reindeer are in a big pen.. nice to feed them for 15 minutes. Then you sit for an hour or so with tea in the tent. Later there is soup and info about saami culture. The bus was late to pick us up and we waited in the cold rain 20 minutes. The trip was ok, nothing special. If you have time maybe go but don’t go out of your way. It is probably more picturesque in the winter.”

“Loved seeing reindeer as we drove to the North Cape. No one should miss The North Cape if they are in this part of Norway!! The excursion team seemed a bit disorganized, we wound up having three different bus drivers over the course of the journey. Perhaps just early season ironing out. All in all, I’d recommend!!”

Reindeer feeding & Saami Culture with chance for Northern Lights

15.Reindeer feeding & Saami Culture with chance for Northern Lights

★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · 84 reviews · 4 hours 30 minutes (approx.) · from $182

Travel from Tromsø by minibus to a Sámi camp near the Lyngen Alps. Feed hundreds of reindeer, hear about Sámi traditions, and warm up inside a wooden lavvu with biddos stew or vegan soup. The camp sits away from city lights, giving you a real chance to see the Northern Lights, though nature makes no promises.

“We were quite upset by this tour. Unfortunately. We experienced the reindeers very stressed and this stress was ping ponging between the animals and the tourists. The animals were actually fighting about the food and didn't seem to have any respect for humans and were very greedy. On the tour we'd been told, the reindeers were wild, but we had more the impression of very spoilt domestics. Once, they also overran a little girl, when they paniced. The staff around didn't seem to be neither surprised nor interested. Also the staff didn't pay attention to protect the animals from inapropriate tourists. That was an experience we didn't like at all.…”
